Quota of Traverse City delivered its 1000th Quota Cares Tote to the Smith Family Breast Health Center on August 3rd! These colorful, cloth bags (hand-sewn by members of the TC club) hold all the items sent home with a woman after she has had a breast biopsy at the center. This service project started in late 2008 and continues to be one of our favorites. We receive weekly notes and messages from women who have received our totes letting us know they truly touched their hearts.

QI of Manila South (District 41 Philippines) 6-7-10
2009-2010 Annual Report Quota International of Manila South Vocational Education for the Hearing-Impaired Students at the Phil. School for the Deaf For the CTC year 2009-2010, QI of Manila South endeavored to meet a wide range of needs of the Philippine School for the Deaf in order to provide / upgrade the tools, supplies, equipment, facilities and services of the school. The following courses directly benefited from our program. Wood-Works Vocational Education course - we provided everything as per the ‘wish list’ of the teacher by donating all new items such as: drill press machine, disc sander machine, grinder machine, cross cut saw, rip saw, hacksaw, coping saw, electric drill, C-clamp, spokeshave, smooth plane, carpenter’s level, file, claw hammers, steel tape measure, chisels, chalk line reel, marketing gauge, screw drivers, palate scraper, caliper, rabbeting plays, crow bar, nail & screw organizer, oil stone, try square, working tables, various kinds of plywood, various sizes of wood, industrial fans as well as other related minor equipment and materials. Garments Trade Vocational Education course - we restored old standard sewing machines, special machines for T-shirt fabric, which included replacement of its wooden body frame, purchased various kinds of new cutting shears, sharpened old scissors, acquired glass display cabinets, 45 new chairs for the students’ use, bought new flat irons, rolls of various kinds of fabric for the indigent students’ projects plus other related miscellaneous items. Welding Vocational Education course - we donated the following: heavy duty impact drill, electric drill, bar cutter, welding machine, industrial fans and various metal products for the needy students’ projects. Computer Vocational Education course - each and every computer was thoroughly checked and reprogrammed as per our annual maintenance plan. Printer ink was also donated. In addition to the above, we repainted all the Vocational Education classrooms at PSD. Furthermore, I’m very happy to report that aside from the CTC funds which our sister clubs worldwide donated, QI of Manila South donated $2,225 to further augment the much needed upgrading of machinery & equipment, etc. We also received a donation of $1,000 from a former Manila South Quotarian. During our 16th DisCon, a flat iron was donated by QI of Whitsunday Pres. Renee Martin and Kerrie McCallum-Coles as well as $50 from D34 PDG/Int’l. Bylaws Chairperson Denise Rowell and members of QI of Coolum Beach. The delegates from Australia, headed by Int’l. Representative Chris Tracey-Patte and PIP Beris Pritchard donated reference materials/patterns for our Vocational Education courses when they visited the Philippine School for the Deaf on 7 April 2010, before our April 8-10, 2010 DisCon in Baguio City. All the three hundred thirty-six (336) students from the 6th grade to 4th year high school at the Philippine School for the Deaf benefited considerably from our 2009-2010 CTC project. The school officials and Vocational Education teachers couldn’t believe that their much awaited ‘wish list’ had finally been fulfilled; and this didn’t arrive in trickles but in entirety. The teachers were almost in tears when they realized that we were serious in granting their requests. The total amount spent for our CTC project for 2009-2010 was notably much higher than proposed. This year, QI of Manila South was very, very fortunate to raise funds to supplement the work plan of our CTC project as well as receive unexpected donations in cash and in kind from friends. Our support for the improvement of equipment, machinery and related items for the Wood-Works, Welding and Garments Trade Vocational Education courses, over and above the maintenance check for computers and replacement of printer ink of the Computer Vocational Education course was highly acclaimed primarily by the entire student body of PSD, their parents, teachers and school officials. Lastly, the members of QIMS strongly believe that if you provide the disadvantaged and the handicapped with the right environment: positive and loving people who surround and nurture them, sufficient opportunities to maximize learning potential, motivation to expand their horizons to achieve whatever it is they want ... there are no limits for these unfortunate brethren. This project has truly aimed to fulfill all these and more.

Members of Quota International of Whitsunday were fortunate to escape the ravages of Cyclone Ului Saturday 20th March as 200klm hour winds swept towards the coast. Cyclone Ului left a path of devastation for boats moored in its path. Some buildings in Proserpine and Airlie Beach have minor damage howevere the stringent building codes introduced since Cyclone Ada in 1970 saved the Whitsndays from the worst of this category 3 cyclone. Phone lines and internet connections were down and electricity was out for 36 hours. All in all we had a very lucky escape from a possible catastrophic outcome. It was a very long and scary night and the cleanup now begins...

Quota International of Whitsunday, Inc. Assists Hearing Impaired Students Quota International of Whitsunday has had a very successful fund raising year and as a result the funds raised at two of their functions have been donated to the Proserpine State Primary and Proserpine State High Schools to enable them to purchased 5 Front Row Phonics Sound Systems. Year 6 student Mitchell Laughton is enjoying some of the best school marks of his life thanks to the fundraising efforts of QI Whitsunday and this innovative new system. The club become involved with the Front Row Phonics Sound System through Mitchell when he was a guest speaker at one of their meetings. Mitchell impressed the Quota members with his presentation and they could see that since he has had the audio system in his classroom how much confidence he had gained. As a result QI Whitsunday was keen to give equal opportunities to all students to advance in their studies. The Front Row Phonics Sound system involves the installation of four speakers in the classroom that projects the teacher’s voice to all corners of the room and assists not only the hearing impaired but all students and the teachers as well. A total of $9240 was donated to purchase the equipment. The money was raised through QI Whitsunday’s Annual Whitsunday Wedding Expo and the Villa Botanica Open Garden weekend. Plans are now underway for further fundraising to enable the club to donate these systems to all schools in the Proserpine and Airlie Beach area.

Quota International of Orrville, Ohio, USA 12-15-09
Quota International of Orrville embarqed on a "Cops 'n Kids" program this fall by hosting a luncheon for Community Leaders to introduce the program and get ideas for serving the community under the "Cops 'n Kids" umbrella. We have had an AWESOME response to the program and have experienced a busy couple of months for our six members ...and we aren't finished yet! We began with a small event at Trinity United Methodist Church in Orrville for their "junior church" program. Their theme was "God's Law". An Orrville Police Department officer attended the event and talked about the similarities between our laws and God's Law. Quotarians distributed books, bookmarks, and a treat. Last weekend, we presented $500 each to the Orrville Area Boys & Girls Club (Pictures with Santa proceeds and some from our Community Outreach Fund) for their Christmas Party. Quotarians also organized and helped 25 children in the "Shop with a Cop" program wrap gifts for loved ones upon returning from a shopping trip with Police Officers, Dispatchers, City Officials and Fire Fighters. Each child was able to choose a book to take home and received a "Cops 'n Kids" bookmark. Quota International of Orrville also donated $500 to purchase perishables for the Orrville Fire Fighters Annual Food Drive. Next weekend, we will supply over 300 books to the food drive to be distributed to every child being served through fourth grade. Just wait until you see what we have planned for 2010! Quota International of Collingwood 11-2-09
Quota International, Inc. is one of the world’s oldest international service organizations, celebrating its ninetieth anniversary in 2009. Quota International of Collingwood has been part of this network since 1977. The Quota club, as it is commonly known, supports communities of the Georgian Triangle. 2009 was a year of success for the Quota club. The service highlight was the ability to send 19 children to camp during the summer. We sent four deaf children to the Bob Rumball Camp of the Deaf in Parry Sound. This was made possible through the efforts of the Duntroon Highlands Golf. Our partnering with the Simcoe County Children’s Aid Society sent an additional 15 children to summer day camps through the YMCA programs. A big thank you to those organizations that chose Quota as a community partner. The Quota club served the local community and international projects in a variety of other ways in 2009: The Hospice Rainbow Bereavement program received our Quota Cares Bears; a child needing critical orthodontic care was assisted; hearing equipment was purchased for seniors and children; My Friend’s House received Quota Care Start-Up buckets; bursaries were awarded to high school graduates proceeding on to secondary education programs in Social Sciences; and the Quota Club continued supporting club-to-club projects in the Third world as well as fostering two children through World Vision. The service mission of Quota International focuses on deaf and hard-of-hearing persons and disadvantaged women and children. Together, local clubs provide hundreds of thousands of service hours and over a million dollars each year to help people in need in their own communities and worldwide. Many clubs provide scholarships for deaf persons or for students planning careers related to speech and hearing. The organization also works together to increase service impact when needs arise. The 75th Annual 10th District Conference was held on May 16,2009 at the University & Whist Club in Wilmington. Members of all four District 10 Clubs attended. Our theme was "90 Years Young - Growing our Legacy". New District Officers were installed and we acknowledged the wonderful leadership that Governor Hope Marchewka and the other District officers provided over the past two years. We were very excited to have Gwen Jackson, current President-Elect, as our International Representative and Gwen did an excellent job in conducting our "Town Meeting" portion of the event. We congratulate her on her election! Right after lunch we had a surprise guest. A George Burns impersonator dropped in (looks, acts and talks exactly like him)and entertained everyone. He was great! District 10 enjoys the benefit of having all four clubs within driving distance, so we see each other often, and support each others programs and fundraisers. Over the next year (with the help of our District Leaders) we will be directing our efforts to establish at least one new club in the District with our initial focus in the lower Delaware area. It was a great weekend, and Quota International of Wilmington was very proud to host this year's conference and thanks everyone who attended for their participation.

Quota International of Monroe, Louisiana 5-10-09
Quota of Monroe's 1st Annual Speech and Hearing Day a Success! On April 24th our club hosted this event. We had 48 children from different areas in our community with both speech and hearing impairments. One of our local newspapers were there The Ouachita Citizen. The following is the article that was placed on the front page with 3 color photos. This was written by Scott Rogers. The Heart of Quota: Club hosts speech, hearing Day Dozens of Ouachita Parish and Monroe City School children were treated with a fun-filled day at Kiroli Park for the first-ever Speech and Hearing Day. The event was sponsored by Quota International of Monroe. Children were allowed to see a fire truck, take nature walks throughout the park, and they participated in other activities such as face painting and story time. Twila Crockett, Quota's event coordinator, said the Quota club wants to make the Speech and Hearing Day an annual event. "It's designed for any child in northeast Louisiana with any type of speech or hearing impairment," she said. According to the Quota club's research, there are about 1,100 children in the Ouachita Parish school system who have some type of hearing or speech issue. "That doesn't include the Monroe City Schools, and it doesn't include all the other children in Ouachita Parish, or even those in northeast Louisiana," Crockett said. She said the event was not solely for students in the Ouachita Parish or Monroe City school systems. Any child in northeast Louisiana who has a hearing or speech issue was welcome to attend any of Quota International of Monroe's events. "The heartbeat of Quota International is speech and hearing," Crockett said. "Because of that, that's why we're creating that heartbeat here in our local community." "We help children who don't have hearing aids get hearing aids, and we help other people — such as disadvantaged women — get hearing aids," she said. "But this event is to celebrate these children and give them an opportunity to have some social interaction because most of the time they don't get that. They don't get the opportunity to interact socially with other kids like themselves because they are in other programs around school." Crockett encouraged any local parent or guardian who has a child with speech and hearing impairment to look into the services Quota International offers. "Our thing is helping kids," she explained. "We just want the public to know that hearing and speech is a big deal. It's all about communication, and that's what we do. "We have to help these kids communicate. We want this to become an avenue so parents will have a social network with other parents. When you have a child who is deaf and the whole family has to learn to communicate via sign language, that is a big deal. So we want to provide a support group for those families. It's my personal goal to help people understand sign language. "We are a multi-cultured area with people who speak different languages. So, we don't need to exclude our deaf because they speak a language, too. It would be a great thing for us to help the community learn basic signs to help them communicate with our deaf residents." Quota International of Monroe was joined by the West Monroe Fire Department, ULM Speech and Hearing Department, ULM School of Nursing, and the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office for the event.
